David in Brussels: Jago’s sculpture at the Italian Cultural Institute

From April 29 to May 22, 2025, Jago’s David will be on display at the Italian Cultural Institute in Brussels, as part of the “Neapolis 2500” program, celebrating 2,500 years since the founding of the city of Naples.

An iconic work, rooted in classical tradition yet open to the language of the present, will be shown in Belgium for the first time. Originally created in 2020 as a clay sketch, the piece evolved through a plaster model and eventually into bronze, and is now awaiting its final form in marble, to be sculpted from a Carrara block over four meters high.

The 100 cm version, cast in gilded bronze in 2024, will be exhibited alongside a selection of photographs of Jago’s most iconic works and behind-the-scenes images from the sculpture’s creation process, offering visitors a deep dive into the sculptor’s creative journey.

The artwork draws freely from the biblical story of David and Goliath, reinterpreting it with a female figure: a proud and powerful presence, holding a sling and a stone—recurring symbols in the artist’s visual language. With this piece, Jago blends Renaissance iconography with contemporary symbolism, offering a visual reflection on courage, defiance, and the role of the individual in confronting dominant powers.
